Sohaila Abdulali wants us to pay attention to what we’ve been missing when we talk about rape. As part of her UK tour of the international bestseller What We Talk About When We talk About Rape, Sohaila will be at the AllBright in conversation with Nimko Ali as part of the Difficult Conversations series.
Join feminist, anti-FGM campaigner, author and professional oversharer Nimko Ali for a series of conversations exploring the topics that women are told they shouldn’t talk about. Thoughtful, provocative and intelligent, Sohaila’s game-changing book looks at sexual assault and the global discourse on rape from the viewpoint of a survivor, writer, counsellor and activist.
She also explores what we don’t say and asks pertinent questions about consent and desire, about redemption and revenge, and about how we raise our sons. Most importantly, she asks: does rape always have to be a life-defining event, or is it possible to recover joy?
Nimko Ali is co-founder of The Five Foundation, the global coalition to end FGM. She has been instrumental in changing legislation around the practice of FGM in the UK and abroad, including getting it included in the Children’s Act in 2019. She has spoken at events including the Women of the World festival and The Girl Summit. At the 2019 Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy Nimko was awarded the UN Women’s Rights Award.
