Motherhood, Business & Social Media – Candice Brathwaite & Debbie Wosskow OBE
August 5 @ 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm UTC+0
When Candice Brathwaite set up her Instagram profile to talk about the challenges of motherhood as a working class black mother, she started to change the conversation. The mumosphere is still largely white and middle class but, over 190k followers later, she’s helping to redress that balance. But she has said ‘the emotional labour of trying to teach or change minds or raise awareness about racial injustice is so, so, exhausting’.
But she now has some power. Officially an influencer, she also has sponsorship deals and financial security. In conversation with Debbie Wosskow, we talk to her about what it means to run a business, personal brand, why women should aim to be financially savvy, her aspirations and inequality in motherhood and BLM.
ABOUT CANDICE: Candice Brathwaite is an author, blogger, influencer and the founder of Make Motherhood Diverse. In her debut book, I Am Not Your Baby Mother, published last month, she examines issues such as unconscious bias, micro-aggression, white privilege and the horrific fact that black mothers are five times more likely to die ion childbirth than white ones.
