Join us for a special screening of Space MOMs – followed by Q+A with writer-director Radha Bharadwaj and producer David Cohen.
On September 24, 2014, India became the first nation to place a spacecraft into Mars’ orbit on the very first try—on a budget that was less than what Hollywood spent to make the space movie Gravity. Space MOMs is an inspiring dramatization of India’s 2014 Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), told through the eyes of women engineers who played crucial roles in making the mission a success. These women were normal, relatable, middle class working moms who helped their kids with their homework, split house chores with their spouses, cared for their parents—and whose day job just happened to be a mission of great importance to their country. Not all heroes wear capes: Some heroes wear sarees.
Award-winning filmmaker Radha Bharadwaj was born and raised in Chennai, India and immigrated to the U.S. She has written and directed two prior feature films: Closet Land, produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer for Imagine Entertainment (Alan Rickman, Madeleine Stowe) and Basil (Jared Leto, Sir Derek Jacobi, Christian Slater). Oscar-winner Eiko Ishioka was the production and costume designer for Closet Land and Philip Glass was the music supervisor. Radha’s original script for Closet Land won the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Nicholl screenwriting competition and was selected for the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab. Both of her previous films were selected to play at the Toronto International Film Festival and at other top festivals. She has adapted Closet Land for the stage, and it has been performed all over the world.
