Freccia Benn

Co-Founder of Accounting for Energy

At AllBright, I have met some of the most interesting, supportive and smart women who I may never have met otherwise.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

I began my career working as a dentist before taking a major career change to follow my passion for entrepreneurship. I co-founded my current business, Accounting for Energy, in 2014. We ensure renewable energy projects are financially sustainable for landowners and I’m responsible for our operations and strategy.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?

I really enjoy building something from scratch and seeing an idea come to life. I am an avid learner and enjoy that every day brings a new challenge and lessons to be learnt.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?

Trust your gut. Early on I made the mistake of ignoring this advice when hiring. I’ve since learnt that your gut instinct exists for a reason and you shouldn’t ignore it!

Why do you think it’s important to support other women?

Studies have shown that when women support each other, more women are found in leadership positions, which in turn is better for business. As women, we look at things differently and have a better understanding of each other. I personally have had wonderful experiences with the support of other women who understand what I am going through and can advise and share their experiences.

Which living person do you most admire?

Serena Williams continues to be a phenomenal athlete, even in the face of continued racism and sexism.

Who inspires you?

I am inspired by many people but more recently – because of where I am in my business – Sarah Blakely of Spanx, due to her tenacity and grit.

What is your motto?

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect”, as Mark Twain once said. Many of the world’s game changers have not necessarily had the same perspective as the majority. Therefore, I try to take time out to think by myself, away from the noise.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Having the courage to walk away from my previous career and start a business. With social, family and economic pressures and many years of study, it was a big change and I had few people around me doing anything like this.

What is your favourite thing about being a member of the AllBright?

You never know who you’ll cross paths with. I have met some of the most interesting, supportive and smart women who I may never have met otherwise.

What does sisterhood mean to you, and who’s in yours?

Sisterhood is about support, authentic relationships and honesty. It’s about being there for each other through the highs and the lows, cheering each other on and challenging each other when necessary. My sisterhood is close-knit and consists of friends I’ve had for as long as 28 years to friends I’ve made more recently, since becoming a mum. We all have our unique strengths and I draw on different people for different things.
