NFTs - where to start?

NFTs - where to start?

There are so many questions surrounding the metaverse and NFTs - and we're here for it! This week, we're answering the one on everyone's lips: where to start? Read on to find out the answers from Liya.

Twitter

It’s what blogging used to be in Web2. It’s where the education happens. Follow people you like and create Twitter Lists to make it easier to navigate, or just follow someone else’s List.

Twitter Spaces can be chaotic when it comes to finding, collating, and saving for later. But persevere - it’s the best place to learn. When you tune into a Space you like, follow the speakers who resonate.

A few accounts I enjoy following: , , , , , , , , , .

Discord

This is like a metaverse version of Slack (or Chatrooms, if you are old enough to remember the 90s). It’s where a community rallies around an NFT project and, in turn, projects have an opportunity to create a space for their supporters. It's fun if you have time for it, but realistically, if you have a life outside of web3, it can be difficult to stay on top of multiple channels. If you're a newbie (like me), is a pretty welcoming place to start, and as they say, ‘no question is a stupid question.' So, head over there for all of your answers!

Podcasts

If podcasts are your preferred medium, then you're in luck! There are plenty of good ones on NFTs and they're growing like mushrooms. Here are a few of my favourites:

by  was the first person I stumbled upon when I started dipping my toes into NFTs, and I've stuck with his content ever since. It was also around the time when he turned Proof into a standalone podcast (previously NFTs were covered in his podcast). Kevin dedicates a lot of time to generative art on his podcast, so I love him for that, but he also covers a balanced mix of NFT projects in general. The episode featuring  on bridging art worlds is one of my favourites.

by  brings an authentic view on NFTs. Easy listening and most episodes are around the half-hour mark. Also gets brownie points from me for giving up his platform to women in web3 on International Women’s Day. Check out this  where he chats with the founder of  – a web3 project led by two female founders.

by , an NFT powerhouse, is a podcast that brings the who-is-who of NFT guests and is a great resource for keeping on top of macro-trends in the NFT economy. I like that she links it back to both the broader trends and the global economy in web3. Listen out for her, ‘Moment of Zen(eca)’ recurring segment which features the NFT influencer .

Webinars

A webinar I enjoyed recently was by  with , where she very clearly explains the concept of web3, entering NFTs as a collector but also talking about them from a founder’s perspective.

Check out the recordings of all the events from the if you haven’t already – you’ll find a whole host of awesome virtual sessions there.

Conferences

This is a great channel for meeting others in the community (if attending IRL[1]). A lot of major cities now host NFT conferences and meet-ups (AllBright recently attended ). Some conferences make all their content available for free, whereas others are paid. Here are some I've personally attended and highly recommend:

The whole day was virtual and is available on  for free. Check out the last session with  from  – I loved listening to their story.

Australian-based hybrid conference (IRL and virtual) with some heavy-hitting global speakers. Check out the virtual panel with Boss Beauties and MyBFF and the minting session with Zeneca. All sessions were recorded and will be available (soon) on YouTube for free.

This event went on for 3 days in November 2021 and some of the topics went deep into the NFT rabbit holes. This is not beginner-level content but check out recordings of individual sessions that might be of interest. 2022 tickets are on sale now.

Courses

A lot of online courses have popped up from nowhere recently. Can’t recommend any myself as I haven’t done one (yet) but  which is run by  (mentioned above in the podcast section) has a Discord channel for learning that I would recommend checking out.

After a few months of immersing myself in the NFT world, I started noticing a common thread. Creators, collectors, or observers, at one point or another, have asked themselves the question: where do I fit in?

For me, those five words explain the phenomenal rise of NFTs. Through them, we find a sense of belonging and communities we enjoy being a part of. Some of the resources I listed above may not be the biggest or most successful out there, but they're the ones that resonate with me at the moment and whose conversation I enjoy being a part of.

I encourage you to curate your own libraries, playlists, and friend lists. If you have any recommendations for me, please comment below... and happy learning!
